Question for Into the Wild Discussion

Please remember that you must bring your Into the Wild book to class with the completed sticky notes. I will grade your notes as part of the preparation for the graded discussion.

The following are some of the questions that we will discuss in the graded discussion on Monday or Tuesday, depending what block you are in:

  1. Is McCandless a Transcendentalist? Or does he misunderstand their ideas?
  2. What does the "wild" mean to McCandless?
  3. Why is Krakauer so fascinated with the young man's life?
  4. Was Chris running away from society or was he seeking something?
  5. What does Chris' story reveal about the American ethos of individualism and self-reliance?
  6. Who is Chris McCandless?
  7. What does the writer want us to think about him and his choices?
  8. What do we think about him?  What is accomplished by his journey?  What meaning can we take away from his life?
  9.  What does it mean to be your own person, to be an individual?  What does it mean to live meaningfully?

Block 1 updates and homework

Today in class we began the work of learning how to analyze the structure of a sentence. The purpose of this work is two-fold. First, analyzing syntax will allow us to understand how the writer creates meaning, and second, we can learn how to write more powerful sentences through this analysis.

Your homework is to read chapters 16-18, prepare the sticky notes and come to class prepared for a graded discussion. I will collect your books with the sticky notes and use your notes as a portion of your graded discussion grade.

This link will help you practice identifying the differences between the two.  http://www.softschools.com/quizzes/grammar/phrase_or_clause/quiz2825.html
Also, remember to study that vocabulary for a quiz next Wednesday. If you are are absent for the vocabulary quiz you must make up the quiz in a timely manner; the quiz will appear on second quarter.

This young man rejects the expectations of society and his parents and embarks on a complicated journey that fascinates Krakauer. Be sure to bring your copy of the book to class with you each day.
