Block 4 post your questions

Post your questions for chapters 4 and 5 underneath this post! Be sure the questions are your own, and don't repeat questions that someone else has already posed. We will use the questions for a graded discussion of the first 5 chapters of the novel.

We will work with the revised copy of your This I Believe Speech. Be sure to a copy of your speech with you in class.

  1. Why is Gatsby so nervous when meeting with Daisy dispite being so welcoming and comfortable to and with most people?
    Why does Tom take Nick to see Myrtle if Tom and Nick aren't that close as friends?
    Does Myrtle's sister, Catherine, have a prominent role in the book later on? Does she represent anything? What about the McKee's?

  2. Was Gatsby using Nick to get with Daisy the whole time or was he actually interested in being friends with him?
    How does Gatsby show appreciation to Nick for reuniting Daisy and him (other than the obvious things like taking him to lunch etc)?

    What is Daisy embarrassed of when seeing Gatsby for the first time in 5 years? (pg. 92).

    Is Jordan Baker using Nick? Why or why not?
    Why does Gatsby still want to be in a relationship with Daisy even though Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan?

  5. Do you think there is a single raw character in this book, or do they all seem to put on their own mask?
    Why is Gatsby so hesitant to tell the truth? What do you think he is hiding? Who/what is he hiding from?

  6. When Daisy is so embarrassed by seeing Gatsby, is it because of their past and how things had ended?

    Is Gatsby just using nick to get closer to daisy? Is he trying to win over Nick so Nick thinks Gatsby would be better for Daisy and push her in his direction?

    Will Daisy ever say anything to Tom about Gatsby?

  8. Is Gatsby telling the truth about his background / why does he lie about it? Why did Nick turn down Gatsby's offer to work for him? It seems all the characters are two faced or "fake", who is the protagonist? Will it be Gatsby?

    2) Does Nick sway towards East Egg or West Egg? Or does he try to stay in the middle?

    3) What is the significance of Fitzgerald's inclusion of mistresses and scandals in the book?

    4) Is Gatsby sincere, or is his false kindness just his way of manipulating others?
