Block 4 homework

Remember to read chapter 5 of Into the Wild, and you will have some time on Thursday to work on your graded puzzle assignment.

I encourage you to look for passages, quotations that you can use on your puzzle in chapter five.  An additional copy of the assignment is below for your convenience.

The Enigma of Chris McCandless

The way this book is written is very similar to a puzzle.  The goal of the puzzle is to figure out who Chris McCandless was and why on earth he would just leave his entire life behind (a life of wealth and success and friends and family) to disappear into the harsh and dangerous Alaskan wilderness.

Since Chris died during his adventure, Krakauer had to get his story by putting together various clues.  He used excerpts from McCandless’s journals and books he read as well as interviews with people who met him at various stages along the way.  He also used stories of other adventurers (including himself) to gain insight into the psychology behind those people who seek out high risk endeavors or who seek out lives that don’t conform to tradition.

At times, the main story of Chris’s adventures will be interrupted by other stories.  But here is your job.  As a reader, your goal is to take the different pieces of the puzzle Krakauer provides and to ask yourself, how does this help me to understand about Chris McCandless?
